<p>Questions 11-14 refer to the literacy and educational level of the enumerated person; either he or she completed the degree or is currently studying. For this reason, only persons aged seven and older are asked these questions.</p>

<p>The purpose of these questions is to find out the educational level of the population with respect to their demographic, economic, and social characteristics.</p>

<p><span class="em">Question 11: literacy</span></p>

<p><span class="ital">1. How to ask the question:</span>
<br />Ask, "Do you know how to read and write?"</p>

<p>The following definitions will help you investigate this question set:
<br /><span class="em">Literate:</span> this person knows how to read and write a simple paragraph in Spanish or another language.</p>

<p><span class="em">Illiterate:</span> this person does not know how to read or write, or only knows how to read, or who can only write his or her name (signature).</p>

<p><span class="ital">2. How to record the answer:</span>
<br />If the answer is positive, mark an "X" in the box next to the word "yes." Mark an "X" in the box next to the word "no" if the answer is negative.</p>
