    Abstract

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis. FAO launched the eleventh-round household survey from 20 January to 25 February 2024 in Sierra Leone. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews across the 16 districts of Bo, Bombali, Bonthe, Falaba, Kailahun, Kambia, Karene, Kenema, Koinadugu, Kono, Moyamba, Port Loko, Pujehun, Tonkolili, Western Area Rural and Western Area Urban. A total of 2813 households were surveyed during the post-harvest period.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The eleventh-round survey reached a sample of 2813 households through face-to-face interviews conducted across all 16 districts: Bo, Bombali, Bonthe, Falaba, Kailahun, Kambia, Karene, Kenema, Koinadugu, Kono, Moyamba, Port Loko, Pujehun, Tonkolili, Western Area Rural and Western Area Urban. The sample was drawn from a panel list of agricultural and non-agricultural households previously interviewed in earlier survey rounds.

Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. The sample design ensures a 10 percent margin of error and a 95 percent confidence level at the target administrative level, and aims to achieve these precision levels for key variables within the targeted populations, including agricultural households.

    Weighting

Observations were weighted for demographic population (base weights) to correct disproportionate sampling at the district level.
