Interviewer instructions
The purpose of this question is to establish the level of school enrolment.
"School / college attendance" refers to any regular educational institutional, public or private, for systematic instruction at any level of education. Examples of educational institutions are primary schools, secondary school, technical schools, agricultural institutions, teacher training colleges and universities. The attendance shall have been full time participation. Adult or vocational training are not to be classified as school attendance.
The response categories are:
"1 never attended" is for those, who have never been at any formal educational institutional at all.
"2: At school "refers to all persons who are still attending formal educational institutions and include those who are temporary absent from school or those on holiday.
"3: left school / college" refers to those who are still attending formal school / college but have left or completed their cycle and are no longer attending.
"4: Distance learning" refers to all those who are studying mainly through correspondence with institutions like Unisa, Damelin and others. These people may be employed, unemployed or economically inactive.
