The Census of Schools has been conducted, since 1960. This census is the the fourty sixth one in a series of censuses conducted annually. This census provides valuable information about goverment school and teachers to policy makers, planners and researchers..
The questionnaire is filled by Principals of the schools and it contains following parts.
- Identification information about the school
- Details about the school children
- Details about the disabled students
- Physical facilities
- Non academic staff
- Details about the teachersThe Ministry of Education has conducted an uninterrupted series of annual school census for well over four decades.
The main objective of the census is to collect following information

v1.0 - This is the first version of the microdata set created for the use of DPD for archiving purposes.
When issuing the dataset to other institutions new versions should be created and the Version Notes DDI's updated accordingly.

The scope of the School Census - 2008 includes:
Part 1 : Identification Information
Part 2 : Students by medium
Part 3 : Students by birth year
Part 4 : Students who failed in the year 2007
Part 5 : Students in grade 1
Part 6 : A/L Science Students
Part 7 : Students by grade according to the subjects study ( Religion, Technical subjects and Easthetic )
Part 8A : Disabled students
Part 8B : Disabled students by birth year
Part 9 : Student by race and religion
Part 10A : Students who obtained grade 5 scholarship grants
Part 10B : Students in grade 6
Part 11 : Examination Reults ( Year 2007 )

The questionnaires are handed over to the Divisional Directors.
Divisional Directors distributed the questionnaires to the schools in their divisions
Divisional Director collects the filled questionnaires and handed over to the Zonal office.
Data enntry is done by the Zonal office and data file is mailed to the Ststistical Branch of Ministry of Education.
Data processing
Manual data editing and coding is done by the zonal offices.
