Having enough water for drinking and personal hygiene is essential, but quantity by itself is not sufficient. The quality of the water is also a crucial health issue. Consequently, one of the targets of the Millennium Development Goals is “sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation”, assessed in part by having access to an improved water supply source.
A well in this case refers to the underground water that is usually dug and fetched using water pumps or container. In some areas in Vanuatu like on Ambae and Ambrym, holes were dug and cemented to collect rain water. These are commonly labelled as wells; however by definition, they will be referred to as tanks instead.
Where more than one household uses piped water from a large tank (usually some kind of community water project) are to be coded as 'piped, private' if the water is piped into or near their home for their exclusive use.
Bottled water here refers to manufactured water that is usually sold in shops.
