The 2013 Employment and Earnings Survey (EES) is the sixth survey in a continuation of the similar surveys conducted each year. The history of the (EES) in Tanzania dates back to 1963 when the first post-independence survey was launched. However, due to lack of financial resources, these surveys were suspended after 1984. In 2001, the EES resumed and were conducted annually except for 2008 and 2009. Reports for 2001, 2002, 2005-2007, 2010-2011, 2012 and 2013 were published and are available both on the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website and in its library.
The main objective of the 2013 Employment and Earnings Survey (EES) was to provide information relating to the status of employment and earnings as well as data on the socio-economic characteristics of the labor market. The survey was designed such that its results could be used for estimating the labor market indicators for use in policy formulation, planning and estimating the contribution of various sectors to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Tanzania Mainland.
This survey was the main source of information on the distribution of employment and earnings, newly recruited workers, job vacancies and the number of employees in the formal sector of employment at regional level. It was expected that it would provide new insights for planners, policy makers, researchers and others dealing with employment and related issues in the country.

The Employment and Earnings Survey 2013 sample was based on a sampling frame obtained from the Central Register of Establishments (CRE) maintained by the NBS. The existing sampling frame was developed on the basis of International Standard Industrial Classification Revision 4 (ISIC Rev.4). 10.
The EES 2013 covered all establishments of public and all private sector establishments employing at least 50 employees. For all private sector establishments employing 5 - 49 employees a multistage sampling technique was used. The first stage within a region included stratification of all private establishments employing 5 - 49 employees into two strata namely 5 - 9 employees and 10 - 49 employees. Then the sample size for each stratum was developed in each region. Finally probability Proportional to Size (PPS) was used to draw the sample within each industry.
A similar approach was used in all the 25 regions to draw the sample size across all industrial major divisions in the two strata separately to enhance representation of all economic activities to the economy.
On average, the response rate was 89.2% Employment and Earnings Survey 2013.
The sampling weights for the strata were calculated by using the simple expansion method denoted as:-

Where: N = Total number of establishments before sampling
n = Total number of sampled establishments
Variable weight was used in the data set to weight the data.
The Annual EES used an English questionnaire which was divided into several sections namely; Identification, Regular employees, Employment and earnings, Casual workers, Number of workers recruited during the last 12 Months and Job vacancies.

After questionnaires were sent to various owners of establishments in all regions, the regional statistical managers were responsible for demonstrating how to fill and make initial checks of the filled questionnaires. In case of any additional information put into a questionnaire, the headquarter supervisors conducted ad hoc training to regional managers on how to address new areas added and how to fill them in the questionnaire.
Data were collected using questionnaires delivered to the selected establishments by regional statistical offices. Data collected refer to identification of establishments, regular employees, casual workers, number of new workers recruited and the current job vacancies. The survey did not include the following:
After the questionnaires were received by the headquarters, Labor and Price Statistics Department recruited temporary editors for editing and coding the filled in questionnaires before data entered to the computer to continue with further data processing steps. Completion data entry followed by computer data editing for consistent and data entry error checks.
