Definition
LIVELIHOOD reports the predominant livelihood zone within a 5 kilometer circular buffer around each DHS cluster location. Livelihood can be used as an indicator for sources of food and/or income and a measure for people's vulnerability to hazards, such as flood, drought, food crisis, market disruption, or conflicts. LIVELIHOOD is available for a subset of the DHS samples with GPS cluster information.
Livelihood zones are country-specific; therefore, codes and labels for LIVELIHOOD vary across countries. The 6-character codes (e.g., 854001) include the 3-digit country code (e.g., 854), followed by the 3-digit numeric livelihood (e.g., West cotton and cereals) code.
