493. Now I would like to ask you what foods (NAME FROM 491) has had over the last 7 days, including yesterday. How many days out of the last seven days did (NAME FROM 491) eat one of the following foods?
FOR EACH OF THE FOODS EATEN AT LEAST ONCE OVER THE LAST SEVEN DAYS, ASK: In total, during the day or night yesterday, how many times did (NAME FROM 491) eat:
a) Food made from grains (example: millet, sorghum, corn, rice, wheat, porridge, or other local grains)?

MAFEDLEGUMWKD (V470W) reports how many days, out of the past seven days, the child's mother gave her youngest surviving child legumes (beans, peas, lentils, or nuts). This variable describes a characteristic of the mother rather than the child.
Although the question wording asks about foods given to a specific child during the previous week, responses relate to the mother, so all young children of the mother are coded the same way. If the mother reported she gave her youngest surviving child legumes in the previous week, all of her young children in the data are coded as "yes" (codes "1" through "7"), including any children who have died or who live elsewhere.
A positive response in MAFEDLEGUMWKD thus does not necessarily indicate whether a particular child of the mother ate legumes during the previous week. IPUMS-DHS users should instead employ the variable FEDLEGUMWKD (M37W) to determine how many days the child ate legumes during the previous week. See Comparability.
