OTHERAN2NUM reports the number of "other" animals owned by the household. The meaning of "other" depends on the specific animals asked about in a given sample. The related variable OTHERANNUM also reports the number of "other" animals owned by the household, but in some samples, respondents were able to give information on two "other" types of animals.
The information in OTHERAN2NUM is taken from the household record and applies to regular household residents, not temporary visitors.
