Definition
For women who gave birth in the last five years, ANCAREGN1_ALL indicates whether, in response to an open-ended question, they reported that a nurse gave antenatal care for a birth. This response category is country-specific to Guinea.
ANCAREGN1_ALL consists of a set of up to six separate variables, covering the most recent birth (ANCAREGN1_01) up to the sixth-most-recent birth (i.e., ANCAREGN1_02, ANCAREGN1_03, ANCAREGN1_04, ANCAREGN1_05, and ANCAREGN1_06) during the reference period prior to the survey. If ANCAREGN1_ALL is included in a data extract, all these separate variables are included in a researcher's data file.
Some samples in the "ANCARE" series include multiple categories that can be consolidated into a single broad response. IPUMS-DHS uses supplemental programming to combine these responses in a standard variable, while also preserving the separate responses in country-specific variables.
ANCAREGN1_ALL is combined with ANCAREGN2_ALL (midwife) for the 1999, 2005, and 2012 Guinea samples to make the standard variable ANCARENURM_ALL. IPUMS-DHS users interested in using ANCAREGN1_ALL are encouraged to review ANCARENURM_ALL for this more comprehensive response category.
