Impact Evaluation Survey
A total of three (3) surveys are to be conducted under the Farming Practice Survey during the following periods: 2007-2008, 2008-2009, and 2010-2011. The data documented here pertain to the baseline survey of 2007-2008.
The overarching goal of the MCA-Armenia program is to reduce rural poverty through better economic performance in the agricultural sector. The objective of the program's Water-to-Market Activity (WtM) is to provide training, technical assistance, access to credit and essential equipment under the MCC-funded Infrastructure Activity.
The primary purpose of the Farming Practices Survey (FPS) is to collect data for an impact evaluation of on-farm water management and high-value agriculture training, which is the primary component of WtM.
Sample survey data [ssd]
The baseline FPS collected data on 4,854 farming households in 223 villages across 10 marzes in Armenia (excluding Yerevan):

The FPS standardized questionnaire was designed based on domains obtained by specialists from MCA-Armenia, MCC and Mathematica, with close review of previous related survey questionnaires. The questionnaire contained 8 blocks of questions to measure the items (topical domains) required by the client (such as characteristics of the household, land and livestock, crops production, water use, farming expenditures, participation in trainings, agriculture equipment consumption and monetary income). The FPS pre-test-including the sample pre-test-was conducted from October 10-11, 2007.

Mathematica selected the villages to include for the FPS. The survey was fielded by a consortium led by AREG, an Armenian survey organization. AREG's fieldstaff worked with village mayors to develop lists of farmers to interview within each village, targeting households actively engaged in farming. The sample covered approximately 3,000 farmers from 120 village clusters in the treatment Group and 2,000 farmers from 80 village clusters in the control group; both treatment and control groups will be surveyed by AREG for each round of the survey.
