Interviewer instructions
This question asks the individual to indicate whether they can read and write. Any language including English, Kiswahili, or other local languages in which the individual can read and write the language should result in a “Yes” response. Otherwise, the answer should be “No”. If a person can only read, but not write, then the response should be “No”. If a person cannot read due to poor eyesight but was able to read before they lost vision then the interviewer should note that this person is able to read and write If the respondent can only read text related to religion that is not in the ALPHABETICAL format used in Tanzania THEN the answer to this question is NO. This question tries to inform us whether the person is able to communicate in terms of reading and writing using the official media of communication.
