Abstract
In this essay, using data from a Nepal household survey, I estimate the overall impact of migration of a household member on the educational attainment of children in the household. A particular emphasis is put on the issue of possible self-selection of migrants both between and within households. I am using the interaction of levels of migrant networks with characteristics of the potential migrant to identify self-selection of the migrants within the household. I focus on two outcomes of primary school aged children: enrollment in primaryschool and grade repetition. I develop household decision-making framework and estimate migration decisions and corresponding educational outcomes jointly under severalsets of assumptions. I ?nd that schooling progress of children in migrant families is lower than if there were no migration.
