Abstract | Demographic trends show that the proportion of Jamaicans 60 years of age and older is increasing rapidly. Most recent census data show that this age category is expected to grow from 10.49% in 2005 to over 14% by 2025. This growing longevity of the Jamaican population is a reality that will present new and exciting challenges to health and other support services. It is expected to challenge researchers throughout the region and beyond to examine emerging critical issues in aging. This paper examines the growth of the older population of Jamaica and discusses the implications for five critical issues of aging: aging in place, age-specific services, economic impact, public funding, and research. The paper argues that, while aging persons and their families will be required to help meet the needs associated with longevity, the rapid growth and challenges of aging Jamaicans cannot be the exclusive purview of elderly persons. Instead, nationally and regionally supported programs and health care services must be provided if we are to add quality and meaning to long life. In this regard, sustainability of health and wellness will require a fundamental change in Jamaican values and culture regarding support of elderly persons. |
