We analyse life satisfaction and optimism in Bolivia using a unique cross-sectional dataset. In con- trast with existing research, we examine the role of non-geographic as well as geographic reference groups: neighbours, classmates, family members, colleagues and fellow citizens. Our findings sup- port the importance of non-geographic reference groups and thereby confirm the relevance of these measures for future research dealing with life satisfaction.
