Abstract | Indonesia's population trends in the 1970s are described on the basis of findings from the 1980 census. Mortality has steadily improved, although it remains high by regional standards; the total fertility rate fell by 17 percent over the decade to the late 1970s, with Java and Sumatra showing the largest declines. Projections assuming a substantial slowing of the growth rate still indicate a population of 200 million by the year 2000. |
