Abstract
This document discusses the results of Phase I of the 1985 Intercensal Population Survey (SUPAS) carried out by the Indonesian Central Bureau of Statistics. The provisional national population total (as of Oct. 1985) is 163.9 million persons, an increase of 16.4 million since 1980, and an annual growth rate of just over 2.1%. 2 government programs have an impact on these data: the transmigration and national family planning programs. Data are compared to earlier projections based on the 1980 census, such as the National Urban Development Survey (NUDS), which projected a 1985 population of 164.2 million. When data from individual provinces are examined, NUDS projections and SUPAS estimates vary considerably; this may be due to inaccurate reporting of transmigration data. SUPAS results suggest a ratio of 101 males to 100 females, but a survival ratio analysis suggests overestimation of the male population in 1985. The actual pace of fertility decline during the early 1980's cannot be assessed until results of Phase II processing are known.
