Abstract | We present estimates of productivity growth for six energy intensive industries in India. We investigate aluminium, cement, fertiliser, glass, paper, iron and steel sectors as well as total manufacturing covering the period 1973-93. This work is part of a larger effort to study the energy sector of developing countries at the disaggregated level in order to arrive at more reliable estimates of AEEI parameters. The available estimates in the literature are marked by wide interand intra-industry variation, and thus are unhelpful in forming a judgement about the nature and extent of productivity growth. Our work is a partial response to the need for estimating productivity growth in a consistent and comparable framework with a common methodology and time period of study for all industries. |
