Abstract
“Catastrophic health care costs are one of the main reasons for intergenerational regression of
households into poverty, and for pushing people below poverty line further deeper into
poverty”2
. Micro-health insurance (MHI) is a tool to reduce health risks of the poor as it is
affordable health insurance available mostly for developing and transitional nations of low
income target group of population more so for country such as Botswana. In this paper, the
scholar has taken the current available MHI schemes in Botswana such as Itekanele Medic Aid
Scheme, and projected MHI development, taking into account the cost benefit analysis and
affordability. Health costs are increasing due to prevailing HIV/AIDS and chronic diseases and
poor is unable to avail the health care due cost and the limiting coverage.
Population data is classified with income earning capacity and linked with the MHI currently
availed. The outcome is compared with the government policies, projections and commitments
for provision of health schemes. The results suggest that there is a bright future for MHI
development in Botswana and it is forecasted that MHI in Botswana will cover 90% of its poor
by 2020.
