Abstract | Census and other data since about 1820 indicate that there has been no unilinear change in household organisation in India. While the joint household seems to have weakened in the urban, educated, professional class, there has been an increase in joint households in the majority of the population. This suggests that the general belief that the joint household is disintegrating in modern India has its origins in a particular small but vocal class. |
