Abstract
Environmental interpretation has a long history in Latvia dating back for centuries. However, organized environmental interpretation dates back to only 2001. At this time, the first group of 22 persons was trained as nature interpreters. Since then, some additional 60 persons were trained. Most of them were representatives from the administrations of protected areas and environmental non-governmental organizations. We examined the tendencies in environmental interpretation in Latvia and developed scenarios for future development. We also looked at how interpretation can be used as a tool in the effective implementation of environmental policy and in raising public awareness in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve.
