Abstract
Land use can simply be defined as the pattern of human activities by the transformation of land cover for various purposes, on the other Land cover is the natural physical condition over the surface. The Satellite Remote Sensing offers an alternative, accurate and fast mode of data collection and updating of the land use/land cover information. Land use/land cover information is pre-requisite for the conservation and management of land, water and vegetation resources. The land use maps of different time interval facilitates the comparison and the change detection. In this paper an attempt has been made to prepare land use/land cover map of the Pachin Basin in the Eastern Outer Himalaya at different time interval using Remote Sensing data. There is very rapid transformation in the pattern and extend of land use/land cover in the study area within very short period of time. The fast growing population of the twin capital towns (Itanagar and Naharlagun) of the state which fall under the Pachin Basin due to migration of the labour force from within and outside the region and the administrative considerations of the then newly created capital complex has put tremendous pressure for the land use/land cover dynamics in the basin.
