Abstract
Gender equality has been a traditional domain of
sociologists and political scientists. However, in recent
years, economists have increasingly come to recognize
that gender equality is also “smart economics”.
On the one hand, women are a major source of new
labour in most European countries, which is important
given declining fertility rates, ageing of society and the
need to sustain pension and health systems
