Abstract |
This study focused on the impact of land tenure systems on the environment. It pointed out that there is serious environmental degradation in Ludara sub-county caused by the different land tenure systems. The land tenure systems examined in this study included customary (communal) land tenure, freehold land tenure, leasehold land tenure and to small extent public land tenure systems. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to generate data. Questionnaires and interview guide were the main instruments of the study. These were administered physically to the respondents. Observation as a technique of data collection was also used concurrently with the other methods. Existing literature from the sub-county was studied to generate more information. The findings of this study indicate that the land tenure systems affect the resources in terms of conservation measures since security of tenancy was not guaranteed. People are afraid to invest on communal land because they know, the land do not permanently belong to individuals. These findings imply that different land tenure systems affect conservation and therefore the government should put appropriate land reform policies to protect the environment without ignoring the land tenure as a major influence of environmental degradation. |
