Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to measure and analyze the evolution of occupational sex segregation in Mexico between the years of 2000 and 2010, considering it as the expression of inequality between men and women in the labor market. Using the Encuesta Nacional de Empleo (ENE) and the Encuesta Nacional de Ocupación y Empleo (ENOE) based on the official labor surveys of INEGI, analyzes the labor force participation rates of women, the gender composition of employment by occupations, as well as the Karmel-MacLachlan segregation index, comparing the years of 2000 and 2010. The results show that: i) even though female participation in the labor market increased, labor segregation increased during the investigated period from .2351 in 2000 to .2420 in 2010; ii) during the decade, the women´s participation in female-dominated occupations remained stable; iii) historically, the concentration of women is constantly observed in the occupations that configure the occupational structure.
