Abstract |
The present study has been carried out purposively in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. Final data were collected personally through interview schedule from 100 distinct households (50 female headed + 50 male headed) from five different clusters from five different block comprising 10 villages in each of Bareilly district. The study revealed that majority of female-headed households (70%) was found in middle age group. Ninety-eight percent of the females were Hindus and majority belonged to the backward caste category. In all, 66% females had medium family size and 70% were widowed. Sixty two percent respondents in female-headed households had marginal (<2.5 acres) land holding and 34% were landless. Livestock rearing was the major occupation found among 30% female-headed against 20% male-headed households. In all, 82% of females had small herd size, followed by 18% owned medium number of livestock. In contrast, 52% male respondents owned medium size of herd followed by 26%, who had large herd size. Majority of females were not using extension services as information sources, thus had low access to extension personnel. Private agency staff and nongovernmental organisations were not at all used by females. Neighbours were the major information sources of female respondents (86%) followed by friends and relatives (64%). |
