Abstract
The household survey is one of three ACTwatch research components1
. The objective of the household survey is to
monitor consumer treatment-seeking behaviors including malaria blood diagnostic testing, choice of antimalarial,
and price paid for treatment. Data are also collected on the determinants of appropriate treatment seeking
behaviors including knowledge, beliefs and attitudes in household members of all ages. Additional information on
experience and attitudes towards the village malaria worker program was also recorded for a quarter of all
households screened.
This report presents a set of core indicators related to prompt and effective diagnosis, treatment (including
information on acquired antimalarials including source of treatment and relative volumes), treatment seeking
behavior, knowledge, practices and beliefs. Indicators are presented at the person and treatment (antimalarial
drug) levels. Core indicators are presented across three domains, reflecting CNM’s delineated areas with
confirmed multi-drug resistant parasites, and special populations. This report additionally presents indicators
on experiences with and attitudes toward the VMW program, taken from a representative sample of all
households screened for study inclusion.
Household inclusion criteria for this study included the presence of a household member that experienced malaria
fever in the two weeks preceding the survey.
