Abstract
The aim of this chapter is to discuss local concepts of power in Northern
Mongolia’s Shishged Depression with particular reference to how the
social prominence of different kinds of persons is embedded within
this environment. Rather than restricting my discussion to one form of social
prominence, my objective is to present a general overview of ‘political types’
(Sahlins 1963) among the Shishged Darhads today. While the specific elements
of this micro-political survey are likely to be specific to the Shishged Depression,
there is good reason to expect that its general characteristics are relevant to
other rural contexts in post-socialist Mongolia.
