Among the governmental programs and policies aimed to support the economic revival of
the Jiu Valley, the disadvantaged zones policy was the most important. The paper outlines the
effects of its implementation on the local economic environment, using the analysis of statistical
data and the results of a field survey, carried out in July 2005. Both quantitative and qualitative data
emphasized that the influence of the policy on the local economic development was much less
significant than expected.
