Abstract | The study examined the utilisation of facility-based maternal healthcare services under the National Health Insurance Scheme. A cross sectional survey design was employed. Four hundred women who had enrolled on the programme and had carried their pregnancies to term were selected through a simple random sampling technique for the study. It was found that women who had formal education up to secondary level and beyond were 7.5 times more likely to utilise skilled delivery care services than their counterparts without formal education. The perception of women about the quality of delivery services also played a paramount role in complete ANC visits. Women who resided in communities where there were health centres utilised delivery services more than those who resided in communities that had no health centres. Rich women were 3.4 times more likely to utilise delivery services compared to the poor. Finally, the decision of most women to utilise delivery services depended on the approval of their husband. Husbands were instrumental in deciding whether their partners receive delivery services while decision to access ANC was often jointly made. Based on the findings the MoH should consider an extensive infrastructural development policy factoring in elements of establishing more community health centres in the rural areas to facilitate frequent utilisation of maternal healthcare services. |
