Abstract
his document presents the health system performance of India, covering the states of Assam, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, in 2003. The sociodemographic profile of household population and respondents is described. The major health risk factors (tobacco use, alcohol intake, diet, physical activity, access to improved water sources and sanitation, and solid fuel use), the prevalence of infectious diseases (tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria, diarrhoea) and noncommunicable diseases (neoplasms, angina, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, depression, psychoses, cataract, trauma, oral health problems), the coverage of DPT and measles immunization among children, and child and adult mortality are described. Health status in terms of mobility, self-care, pain and discomfort, cognition, interpersonal activities, vision, sleep and energy, and mental health is evaluated. The health system responsiveness for inpatient and outpatient care, health expenditure, health insurance and human resources for health are discussed.
