Abstract | The objectives of macro-economic policy at the most general level, is to maximize long-run societal well-being in an equitable and sustainable manner. Sudan government, under pressure of huge external and internal imbalances and severe shortage of foreign currency, was obliged to accept and implement the International Monetary Fund (IMF) structural adjustment program (SAP). The reforms of the economy that had been carried out and the conditions imposed upon the Sudan by the IMF as price to the financial support were considerably harsh. However, it is evident that these policies have led to severe deterioration in the economic performance. It follows that, the incidence of poverty, and the number of poor families in Sudan had respectively increased. The impact of these policies was great on the provision of and demand for health and educational services due to the reduction of public spending especially in free education and health services. This led to weak national record on human development outcomes. The real challenge facing Sudan is to sustain macroeconomic stability so as to mobilize productive sectors, to attain balanced and sustainable economic development and to reduce poverty. |
