Abstract |
Past, present, and future fertility indices for Liberia are presented. Liberia's first population census, conducted in 1962, showed a population of 1.02 million. 1971 figures, based on the continuous Population Growth Survey begun in 1969, estimates a population of 1.57 million with a total fertility rate of 5.6/1000 women. Statistics are provided for various components of growth including mortality, immigration, and emigration rates. The population of Liberia in 1971 is described in terms of age, sex, marital status, education, tribal affiliation, and geographic distribution. Population projections for 1965-1985 are presented. At present, total population does not seem to pose any problem for Liberia; however, it is important to note the continuous rise in the rate of growth due to the fall in the crude death rate. There has also been a rapid growth of the younger population. By 1985, those under 15 will account for 47% of the total population. |
