Abstract | Population of Georgia has decreased since its independence. Some of the population’s decline was due to the decrease of fertility and increased mortality levels, but the main impact is related to the emigration. In the period between two population censuses, 1989 and 2002 Georgia lost more than one million persons due to the emigration. In the years followed independence, an economic crisis, civil war and other armed conflicts led to the displacement of many people. According to all of the exits projection population of Georgia continues to decrease. In order to discuss the Georgian population prospects, it is very important to have better estimates of the population and vital statistics, as well as migration statistics. |
