Abstract
Employment and growth are two basic indicators for the development process of any economy. They
serve as significant variables in the attainment of sustainability of inclusive growth of Indian economy also. The
focus on the employment generation in Indian economy has initiated around the second half of 1970s and 1980s
when economy is facing high unemployment rates during the planning period. With the initiation of reform in
post 1990s, it has generally been realized whether reforms driven growth of Indian economy has been job
creating or not. Manufacturing, mining, electricity, gas and water supply and construction has gain a remarkable
recovery in three years after 2008-09 but lost its momentum thereafter due to some supply and demand side
constraints. The latest gross domestic product estimates show that industry grew by just 1.0 percent in 2012-13
and slowed further in 2013-14, posting a modest increase of 0.4 percent (Economy Survey, 2013-14). The paper
employed tools of empirical econometrics analysis to examine the employment elasticity in secondary sector both
as aggregated and disaggregated level in post reform era and also provides some suggestion on how employment
intensive growth is necessary to reach the fruit of demographic dividend for Indian economy.
