Abstract
This paper examines the current management and facilities of Refuse management and sanitation
board (REMASAB) the Government agency responsible for the management of solid waste in Kano
metropolis. To generate the required data copies of a questionnaire were also administered to
household heads in three residential zones of the city to ascertain the knowledge and perception of
the public with regards to the effectiveness of the agency. Field experience with the agency for a
period of four Saturdays covering four months revealed the practical difficulties and the complexities
of the operation. Unstructured interview with the management and staff of the agency provided
additional information. The results of the study indicate that the current management and facilities
can only evacuate about 20% of the waste generated in the metropolis daily. This is due to a number
of problems among these are: lack of adequate disposal facilities, inadequate coverage and inefficient
operation among other factors. The study also identifies the difficulties that limit the management of
REMSAB in the form of technical, financial, institutional, economic and social factors. The paper
argues that there is the need to recognize these issues that are peculiar to developing countries in
managing solid waste and to understand the reasons for these peculiar issues in order to establish a
sustainable management of waste.
