Abstract
The paper examines the vulnerability of indigenous urban populations to windstorm hazards
in relation to changing patterns of urbanization, land use land cover and wind climate in Ibadan,
the largest traditional urban centre in sub-Saharan Africa. The vulnerability characteristics of
residents of wind-damaged houses in the high-density core area and older suburbs of the city
were assessed through field survey and administration of a purposively-designed
questionnaire following a major windstorm event in March 2008. Findings of the study
provide insights into changing climate risk patterns and emerging vulnerabilities of
indigenous urban populations in Ibadan. The role of local stakeholders in mitigation and
adaptation planning is also highlighted.
