Abstract
A study was carried out to assess the employment generation from non-timber forest product (NTFP’S) enterprise in Benin
metropolis, Edo state with the use of multi-stage random sampling method. Thirty and 0.008% sampling intensities were
sequentially used on the 34 communities and a population of 1,085,676 respectively in the study area based on the 2006
census figure to obtain 87 respondents. The results showed that 93.0% of the respondents were involved in full time while
7.0% of them were involved in part time business. The plant parts utilized were fruits, leaves, seeds, mushrooms, bark and
seeds which accounted for 53.2, 15.9, 13.7, 6.5, 6.2, and 4.5% respectively. The results also revealed that trading (47.5%),
dominated other activities of employment generation followed by fuel wood harvesting, carving, craft-making, hunting and
farming which accounted for 16, 13.7, 9.2, 8 and 5.6% respectively. The results also showed that women involved in the
marketing of NTFP’s accounted for 85.2% while men were 14.8%. It is therefore recommended that conservation strategies
have to be adopted in order to increase the supply base of NTFP’s in order to prompt such entrepreneurs to remain in the
business.
