Abstract
Climate change is one of the most important global environmental threats with serious
implication on natural ecosystem, water supply, agriculture and health. The massive
destruction of forest through charcoal production does not only exacerbate the depletion of
Nigeria resources but also impact negatively on the biodiversity of the ecosystems. The
presented study investigated the climate change awareness and socio-economic
characteristics of charcoal producers in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo state, Nigeria. Data were
collected from 240 charcoal producers in the area through the use of interview schedule
using multi-stage sampling technique. The findings revealed that 93.75 and 95.83 % of the
respondents were male and married respectively, while 50 per cent of the respondents had
charcoal production as primary occupation with 62.50% in charcoal production since the
last 10 years. About 63% of the respondents produced between 10001-20000 bags of
charcoal per annum while 81.67% of the respondents had high level of awareness on the
climate change but perceived that charcoal production does not lead to low farm yield, rising
sea level, extinction of species of plants/animals, depletion of agricultural land, floods and
environmental pollution. Chi-square test showed significant (p<0.05) relationship between
age, sex, marital status, educational level, years of experience, and occupation of the
respondents and charcoal production. Also, charcoal producers have a positive perception of
the effects of charcoal production on the climate change. There is need for enlightenment
programmes among rural dwellers on the effects of charcoal production on the environment
through various cooperative bodies and religious group. Strict adherence to policy on
forestry among all stake holders is essential.
