Abstract
Significant associations between fatherhood-related factors and young child feeding have been
recognized by studies worldwide. Yet few studies have attempted to study fathers' knowledge and
involvement in exclusive breastfeeding. This study tested a hypothesis of positive changes of fathers'
knowledge on exclusive breastfeeding after a health education program. A quasi-experimental,
pretest-posttest, non-equivalent control group design was used. At the baseline, 251 pregnant women
and their husbands were enrolled into the intervention group and 241 comparable couples were
enrolled into the control group. The one-year intervention targeting fathers included radio programs,
game show-style community events, short videos to trigger fathers' problem solving, posters,
pamphlets, humorous coffee mugs, T-shirts, and group and individual counseling.Fathers in the
intervention group had greater breastfeeding knowledge than fathers in the control group. Related
to the knowledge on correct understanding about the definition of exclusive breastfeeding, the
importance of exclusive BF in disease prevention, the time for exclusive BF is 6 month, the changes
in percentage between before and after survey of those respective items among men were 2.6, 1.86
and 1.9-fold higher in the intervention than control site. The intervention was effective in significantly
changing knowledge of fathers. The education model should be maintained and replicated in the local
context of Chi Linh and Hai Duong and considered for conducting further test in wider application
to support exclusive breastfeeding.
