Abstract | The study investigated energy consumption of office buildings in Abuja, Nigeria to elicit their status, impacts and performance on the city’s energy supply. The study provided a general synopsis on status of energy in Nigeria and highlights of its evolving built environment viz a vis its electricity infrastructure. The study confirmed that commercial buildings (including office buildings) have a significant impact on the energy supply of the city. The study also confirmed the prevalence of a suppressed energy demand scenario due to shortages in energy supply. Using the Energy Use Index – EUI as a building energy performance indicator, the study reported a derived EUI ranging between 13KWh/m2 a – 134 KWh/m2 a which is significantly lower than other global reporting. This was attributed to prevalent suppressed energy supply. Energy saving opportunities was identified while an energy conscious building design and development is encouraged to enable a sustainable built environment. |
