The paper presents an argument for the provision of air conditioning in office and residential developments in
Lagos, Nigeria while noting the international drive for energy conservation and sustainability. An historical
perspective of natural ventilation and mechanical cooling is given. Also the outcome of recent studies
regarding the comfort criteria for Lagos is discussed. Proposals are proffered for low-energy design of
buildings.
