Abstract
The study identified use of improved cassava production technologies among farmers in Anambra
State, Nigeria. Structured interview schedule was used to obtain information from a sample of 80
cassava farmers. Percentage and mean score were used for data analysis. Majority (56.2%) of the
farmers inherited land for planting of cassava and finance it through personal savings (57.5%). The
respondents indicated that extension agents (45.0%) were the major source of information on improved
cassava production technologies and were growing improved cassava varieties because of high yield
(M= 3.0). It was discovered that the farmers were practicing the use of improved production
technologies such as ploughing and ridging before planting using plough and ridger (M= 3.0), weeding
at least two times per planting season (M=3.0), use of improved varieties of cassava (M= 2.4) and
supplying (replacement of ungerminated cuttings) (M= 2.0). However, the use of agro-chemicals and
fertilizers were not widely practiced. Constraints to use of improved cassava production technologies
were high cost of fertilizer, agro-chemicals, lack of modern processing facilities and poor market
networks. The study recommends the need for provision of subsidies on fertilizers and agro-chemicals
by the Nigerian government and highlights that efforts of extension agents are highly needed in
organizing training programmes, workshops, agricultural shows and seminars in order to sensitize the
farmers on the need for using improved cassava production technologies in order to increase
productivity.
