Abstract
The apparently irresistible forces of rising populations and car ownership of most cities in Nigeria seem likely to
intensify the transport problem in circumstances were the urban transport planning process is failing to solve the
existing ones. The application of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in Traffic Management will help in
solving identified traffic congestion problems and also provide a base for transport policy formation. For this
study, a SPOT imagery of the area was acquired. ARC GIS 9.3 software was employed to obtain information by
the process of digitizing the SPOT imagery for the purpose of delineating all the major road networks. The
results indicated the structures/buildings that fall within the buffer zone. The study recommends traffic
management strategies in addition to existing traffic management techniques which include development control
(setbacks, parking standards), legislations, provision of central parking facilities, dualization, maintenance of
roads and relocation of major motor parks to outskirt of the town.
