Abstract
Thousands of tons of solid waste are generated daily in Africa. Most of it ends up in open dumps
and drains. Environmental impacts from solid waste management are rooted in inadequate or incomplete
collection and recovery of recyclable or reusable wastes. Sachet water package “wastes” in made up of
thermoplastics and it is increasingly becoming a problem in Nigeria and Benin City in particular. The area of an
average sachet water pack is 0.0211m2
. Benin City with a population of 1.225 million and couple with the fact that
an average man needs two-three (2-3) liters of water a day, the resultant volume of waste for the period of 2010
to 2025 using growth rate of 3.3% the sachet water waste generated is between 4,610,880 to 7,503,926.4
converting it to area covered by the waste (0.0211m2
), it will be between 97,289.6 m2
to 158,332.8m2
. This is
already a serious problem to government and the environment.
