Abstract
Although Ghana, just like many developing countries, has implemented a number of poverty reduction
programmes; the country still has high poverty rates with rural northern Ghana being endemic. Rural
entrepreneurship has been advocated as an alternative route to poverty reduction. Consequently, this
paper examines the cultural settings of rural northern Ghana based on Hofstede (1980) and
Trompenaars (1994) cultural dimensions as an assessment for rural entrepreneurship development. The
research involves five case studies across the three northern regions that have diverse cultural practices.
The cultural dimensions identified to favour rural entrepreneurship are best described as ‘a mix’ in
terms of Hofstede and Trompenaars dimensions. Contrary to the view that, “collectivism” and
“femininity” are not supportive cultural features in terms of entrepreneurship development, this paper
proposes that these should be considered as critical in rural entrepreneurship development in developing
countries that show similarities like rural northern Ghana. The study is a pioneering research in culture
(the dimensions) and rural entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa, since no related literature was
sighted at the time of this research. Therefore, makes significant contribution to the academic literature
in the subject area.
