Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to study differential female
nuptiality patterns in Bangladesh using data from the 1976 Bangladesh
Fertility Survey. This survey was the first of its kind in Bangladesh
to collect elaborate information on marriage, dissolution and
remarriage. Prior to this study little was known about nuptiality
differentials in Bangladesh.
Age at marriage is increasing in both rural and urban areas
of Bangladesh. Education levels have the greatest effect on age at
marriage, and religion and level of education have maximum impact on
marriage dissolution. Age at marriage and probability of early
marriage disruption are inversely related in Bangladesh. Some sociodemographic
characteristics of the survey population are also examined
by using the household information section of the survey questionnaire.
