The paper shows that the theory of compensating differentials finds an empirical support in Russia in 1998. Differences in riskiness of work across the regions significantly influence wages paid. At the same time, differences across five aggregated sectors are insignificant. The value of life in Russia is estimated to be lower than in developed countries.
