In this work, the causes of poverty are approached from a dierent methodological perspective. e research aim is to determine whether the
incidence of poverty in the city of Bogota is caused by a number of variables, which dier from those related to the individual characteristics
of people. e explanatory variables selected were the unemployment rate, the real minimum wage, the nominal minimum wage, the cost of
the family basket, the population growth in Bogotá, the consumer price growth index and the GDP in Bogota. e observation window was
the 2002-2015 period, which can be considered representative economy behavior of Bogota, Colombia. It was found that the main causes
of poverty in Bogota are the high growth of the price of the family basket in comparison with the slow growth of the real minimum wage.
Poverty is also closely related to GDP. Extreme poverty, as part of the monetary poverty statistics, is an important cause of monetary poverty.
Real wages are also a factor explaining the growth of monetary poverty.
