Although interfamily and intergeneration solidarity is still a strategy frequently
used in Colombian households, adequacy and stability of income
for elderly should be guaranteed, mainly through pension payments. This
article reviews the main programmes and mechanisms within the Colombian
legislation that meet the needs of the aged population’s income, verifying
in a descriptive way whether or not those are adequate and sufficient.
The challenge for the country would be to reach an appropriate pension
coverage for the growing elderly population in quantitative and qualitative
terms. Finally, some policy suggestions are presented.
